Bede entered the medical device arena in 1995 and holds an MBA in Finance and Innovation. He has held various local and global sales and marketing leadership positions in the medical device industry and is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the company. Numerous rugby injuries are a personal motivation to maintain a presence within the orthopaedic community.
Research and Development
Brad has a PhD and undergraduate honours in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sydney. His research has been on the application of biomechanical models for total hip replacement surgery which has allowed him to become a founder and the Chief Technical Officer for Optimized Ortho. Brad is responsible for Optimized Ortho’s research and development activities. He enjoys spending time at the beach on the weekend with his three children and loving wife.
Jeff obtained a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Neuroscience from Macquarie University. He has many years’ experience in the medical device industry covering sales, marketing, product development and senior management positions for both multinationals and local medical device distributors. Jeff is a cornerstone investor and has a position on the board. He has also run his own spinal prostheses distribution business which was successfully sold in 2010. Jeff has a passion for medical device innovation and has interests across a broad range of device start-ups (although he doesn't allow these interests to interfere too heavily with his surfing).
Research & Development Manager
Jim studied a Bachelor and Master of Medical Engineering at The University of Leeds and The University of California. He is currently completing his PhD at the University of Sydney, working towards defining an optimal acetabular cup orientation, patient-specifically, using computational modelling. He is responsible for the development and advancement of Optimized Ortho’s Hip program. Jim is a sports tragic and will likely be found deteriorating his neglected joints on the soccer field in his spare time.
Sandeep studied a combined Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) and Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree at the University of Sydney, and recently completed a Masters from the same university. Sandeep is responsible for maintaining the ISO 13485 Quality System and all quality aspects of production for the Post-Operative and Pre-Operative Kinematic Simulations. He likes working with an engaging group of people and is planning to write a song about his experiences with the simulation technology.
Product Development Engineer
Willy recently graduated from the University of Sydney and holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical). Willy is responsible for the production of patient specific cases, from the processing of patient CT scans and X-rays through to the running of Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Kinematic Simulations and delivery of the resultant outcomes to Surgeons. Willy loves the fast and flexible corporate culture that enables the team to reach our goals.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr Walter is a specialist hip and knee arthroplasty surgeon with over 30 years’ experience. He has performed over 5000 total hip replacements and is a director of Peninsula Orthopaedics Research Institute. With a long-term interest in the biomechanics of hard-on-hard bearings, he has published and presented widely in this area and has a special interest in the biomechanical advantages of patient specific positioning of implants. Whilst most recently he has used the small posterolateral approach, he is also experienced in the direct lateral, Hardinge, Watson-Jones and direct anterior approaches. He is currently Chief Medical Officer at Optimized Ortho, a company dedicated to the innovation of patient specific technologies.
Product Development Engineer
Joshua studied a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering and Commerce at the University of Sydney. Joshua is responsible for the production of patient specific cases, from the processing of patient CT scans and X-rays through to the running of Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Kinematic Simulations and delivery of the resultant outcomes to Surgeons. He is an avid board game player and enjoys playing with his close group of friends.
Quality Assurance Officer
Enya studied a combined Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical) and Bachelor of Medical Science (Physiology) at the University of Sydney. She is assisting the Quality Manager for maintaining the ISO 13485 Quality System and all quality aspects of production for Post-Operative and Pre-Operative Kinematic Simulation. Her great love for puppies is unfortunately dampened by her equally strong allergy towards them; she is currently seeking a cure.
Product Development Engineer
Richard studied a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Wollongong University and was part of 5 Formula SAE racecar teams, designing and manufacturing major vehicle systems. Richard is responsible for maintaining and developing the Optimized Ortho kinematic simulation software. Out of the office, Richard takes every opportunity to be swing, rock’n’roll, balboa or blues dancing in Sydney or around Australia.
Ele recently graduated from her degree in Mechanical (Biomedical) Engineering at the University of Sydney. She enjoys tackling technical problems and contributing to improving quality of life for patients. The motivated and friendly atmosphere in the office keeps her driven. She also likes cooking, playing the trumpet and swimming!
Production Team Leader
Yolanda recently graduated with a Bachelor degree of Biomedical Engineering (Honors) from University of Sydney. Yolanda is responsible for the processing of raw patient CT scans and X-rays through to the running of Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Kinematic Simulations. She is an enthusiastic volunteer who enjoys most of her weekends assisting people with disabilities, striving to make a difference in their lives.
Product Development Engineer
Cat completed a Master of Medical Engineering at the University of Bath. She went on to work as an engineer in the orthopaedics and spine markets in the UK before chasing the good weather and joining the Optimized team in sunny Sydney. Cat is responsible for linking the engineering team to our surgeon customers, supporting the development of the Hip technology. Cat likes to keep fit through sport and dance and enjoys bullying her colleagues into signing up for extreme obstacle races and fun runs.
Simulation Engineer / Training Manager
Alex studied a Bachelor degree in Bionic engineering in Mexico City, completing a fifth-year thesis project which was designing and constructing a myoelectric dynamic upper limb orthotic device. He worked as a patent engineer in the biomedical industry for two years before moving to Australia. On weekends, he coaches kids soccer and can also be spotted at the Glebe markets.
Dean studied a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and a Master of Biomedical Engineering concurrently, from the University of New South Wales. Dean is a member of the hip production team and is responsible for the processing of raw CT scans and X-rays for Pre-Operative and Post-Operative simulations. He enjoys working on challenges that have a direct positive impact on people’s health and lifestyles. Outside the workplace Dean enjoys a variety of activities including bowling, tennis, poker, soccer, table tennis and public speaking competitions.
David recently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Hons 1). Through his experience working on patient specific cranial prostheses during his thesis, he was able to transition easily into his current role, customising hip implant position to patients’ unique anatomy. In his spare time, he enjoys leading a balanced lifestyle, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, hanging with friends and going to church.
Jess recently graduated with first class Honours in a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Mechanical) from The University of Sydney. She is responsible for processing individual patients’ cases to achieve optimal cup positioning through kinematic simulations. Jess enjoys travelling overseas and seeking new adventures when she’s not in the office. She also enjoys trying new and delicious foods.
Michael studied a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (Honours) at the University of Sydney. Michael is responsible for the processing of raw patient CT scans and X-rays through to the running of Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Kinematic Simulations. Michael is an avid sports fan and is keenly awaiting the next Optimized Ortho Tough Mudder event.
